SALUTE
It was during a yoga class
after hours at the middle school
with some fellow aging
less-than-flexible neighbors
that I said to myself,
I love the way our
dog pees when there’s
no bush handy or no trees
or he just doesn’t feel
like it, who knows? He
stretches his front feet forward,
balances his butt on one rear leg
then reaches the other straight
back, as if he were
doing his pre-run warmups or
assuming the yoga position
known as the fourth or “lunge”
pose of the Sun
Salute. I thought,
I could do that.
